The water mass transformation framework and variability in hurricane activity

Vice President Modelling and Research Elizabeth Harris has published an article in Climate Dynamics on water temperatures and Atlantic hurricanes.

In the co-authored article, Liz quantifies the amount of heat from the atmosphere into the ocean, as increased hurricane activity has been linked to a warming Atlantic.

In some years, heat from the atmosphere can explain most of the water warmer than 26.5 C, but in other years, ocean currents are likely responsible for most of the heat development.

The article was co-authored with Robert Marsh of the University of Southampton, UK, Jeremy Grist of the National Oceanography Centre, Southampton, and Gerard McCarthy of Maynooth University in County Kildare, Ireland.
